The Porsche 911 GT1-98 delivered one of the most memorable victories in Porsche’s long history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning the race outright in 1998.
For the 1998 season, Porsche substantially reworked its 911 GT1, creating the 911 GT1-98 with a new carbon-fiber chassis and extensive aerodynamic development. At the 66th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the #26 Porsche was shared by Allan McNish, Laurent Aïello and Stéphane Ortelli. After a dramatic race-long battle with the Toyota GT-One, the Toyota's leading #29 suffered a gearbox failure with around 90 minutes remaining, allowing the #26 Porsche to take the overall victory. The result gave Porsche a one-two finish, with the #25 sister car second, and marked Porsche's 16th overall Le Mans victory at the time.
