The Lotus 78 was one of the Formula 1 cars that helped introduce ground-effect aerodynamics to Grand Prix racing.

The Lotus 78 was developed around the aerodynamic principle of creating a low-pressure area beneath the car to generate additional downforce. This approach became one of the defining technical developments of late-1970s Formula 1. In 1978, Ronnie Peterson returned to Team Lotus and won the South African Grand Prix driving car #6, securing a dramatic last-lap victory over Patrick Depailler.
